Spelling Notebooks went home this afternoon. Remember to learn your spelling words Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. Our 'Fab Word' for this week is 'mnemonic'. Challenge yourself to find out what this word means and which letter of this word is silent. Say the word to someone in a sentence. It is so great to see people reaching milestones in their Reading Logs.......Wow.........Wouldn't it be great if all of Room 8 were in Mr Hyndman's '200 Club' at the end of the year. Talk to someone about your times table goal. We all have a times table goal that we are working on learning. What is yours? We have a visit from Tommy Wilson tomorrow during Senior Hui. Tommy Wilson wrote and illustrated the Kapai books. We are going to be looking at reasons for and against chopping down the trees next to school tomorrow. What do you think? Should they be cut down or should they remain where they are?
Miss Gow looks forward to seeing everyone again at school tomorrow.

I am very excited about your blog Room 8. It's going to be fun to look at it and see some of the exciting things that are happening in your room. I can see that you are learning about ANZAC Day and Miss Gow has given you the recipe for ANZAC biscuits. I'm an expert on ANZAC biscuits so if you need anyone to taste them for you just pop down and see me. I'm only too willing to help. Maybe I could come and read an ANZAC story to your class. If you think this is a good idea send someone to see me and arrange a time.

Mr. Hyndman

ANZAC Biscuits

We have been learning about ANZAC biscuits. Today we tried some. We found out that a small amount of money from each packet of biscuits sold sometimes goes to help war veterans. Money raised from poppy sales also goes to help war veterans.

1. Who made the first ANZAC biscuits and why were they probably made?
2. How long did it take for supplies to reach the Anzac's in Gallipoli?
3. What was the problem with the army biscuits the soldiers were originally issued with?
4. Why didn't the ANZAC biscuits sent to the soldiers contain eggs?
5. Why were the biscuits packed into air tight tins?

ANZAC Biscuits

If you were wanting the recipe for for ANZAC Biscuits that we looked at in the School Journal today here it is:

You will need:
1/2 cup white flour
1/2 cup sugar
3/4 cup rolled oats
3/4 cup coconut
100 grams butter
1 tablespoon golden syrup
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2 tablespoons boiling water

1. Mix the flour, sugar, rolled oats and coconut in a bowl.

2. Get an adult to help you melt the butter and golden syrup in a saucepan over a low heat.

3. Put the baking soda in a cup. Ask an adult to help you add the boiling water. The mixture will foam up. Add this to the mixture of butter and golden syrup.

4. Pour the liquid mixture into the flour and other dry ingredients. Stir.

5. Grease a baking tray. Put tablespoons of the mixture onto the tray about 4 centimetres apart.

6. Bake at 180 degrees celcius for about 15 minutes or until the biscuits are a golden colour.

Spelling Notebooks

Spelling Notebooks are due back tomorrow. Don't forget to talk to someone about our fab word for this week and be prepared to share your findings tomorrow. Our fab word is 'ally'.
